Detect lookahead bias before using a strategy
Check whether a strategy uses future candle information unavailable at decision time.
Goal
Goal: Check whether a strategy uses future candle information unavailable at decision time.
Steps
- Download target data and run a baseline backtest. [lookahead]
- Run
freqtrade lookahead-analysis --strategy MyStrategy --timerange 20230101-20250101. [lookahead] - Inspect flagged indicators/signals, fix
populate_*, then rerun analysis and backtest. [lookahead]
How to verify
All bias flags are explained or fixed, and corrected results are compared with baseline.
Troubleshooting
The command may stop with too few trades; increase data or narrow the conclusion.
Permissions
Prerequisites
- Python 3.11+, Freqtrade installed, a pinned strategy, and a local user-data directory.
Permissions
- Use public market data and local history; treat every trading decision as research and never connect a live account.
Limitations
The analyzer has caveats; no warning does not prove absence of bias.
