Istio traffic routing, circuit breaking, and canaries
Use VirtualService and DestinationRule for routing, balancing, and progressive delivery.
Skills
Confirm Istio is installed and service labels/ports are correct. Define VirtualService routes by host and subset, and DestinationRule policies for versions. Shift traffic gradually, set connection pools and outlier detection for fault isolation, then inspect route hits, errors, and latency in telemetry/Kiali. Validate in a non-production namespace, ramp carefully, and retain the previous weights/version for rollback.
Permissions
Prerequisites
- Requires a Kubernetes cluster, Istio control plane, service versions, and kubectl read access.
Permissions
- May inspect and draft VirtualService/DestinationRule; applying manifests changes cluster traffic and needs separate production approval.
Limitations
Fields vary by Istio/CRD version; bad weights, subsets, or selectors can disrupt traffic—validate and prepare rollback.
