Expo Development Clients
Configure and build a development client for device testing when Expo Go cannot support required native code.
Skills
Try `npx expo start` with Expo Go first. A development client is needed for local Expo modules, Apple extensions, or native modules absent from Expo Go. Check the development profile in `eas.json`, choose local or EAS Build, then install the client and connect it to Metro. TestFlight submission is an internal-test distribution step and still needs authorization.
Permissions
Prerequisites
- An Expo app that requires custom native code; local builds need Xcode or Android SDK, while EAS builds need an account.
Permissions
- Creates configuration and starts local or remote builds, which may use signing certificates and EAS settings. Do not submit to TestFlight or distribute builds without user approval.
Limitations
Most JavaScript-only apps can use Expo Go; this workflow is for projects that need custom native capabilities.
