Back to catalog / Agent orchestration
Route a task to a specialist agent by explicit intent
Have a triage agent route matching requests to the right specialist and define who answers after transfer.
Goal
Route requests to the proper specialist and prevent mismatches from being handed off.
Steps
- List each specialist’s boundaries, acceptance conditions, and explicit exclusions. [openai-handoffs]
- Give each specialist a concrete
handoff_descriptionand register allowed targets inAgent(handoffs=[...]). [openai-handoffs] - Use
handoff(agent=..., input_type=...)for structured routing fields and check authorization inon_handoff. [openai-handoffs] - Provide a clarification or return-to-manager path for boundary cases rather than silently choosing a specialist. [openai-handoffs]
- Test matching, non-matching, and ambiguous requests for each specialist and check who answers. [openai-handoffs]
How to verify
Routing tests should show the selected specialist and response owner; ambiguous requests should clarify or fall back.
Troubleshooting
If routing is unstable, narrow handoff descriptions and add explicit fallback behavior for ambiguous requests.
Permissions
Prerequisites
- Python 3.10+, openai-agents compatible with the pinned revision, and authorized model-provider credentials (except local mock tests)
Permissions
- Use a local or isolated test environment; use least privilege and approval for external data or side effects
Limitations
SDK behavior varies by version. Check the pinned revision against your agent or client, then review data retention, authorization, and side effects before production use.
