Have a manager agent call specialists and synthesize one answer
Delegate bounded subtasks to specialist agents while a manager retains ownership of the final answer.
Goal
Call multiple specialists for a compound request and have the manager review and combine their results.
Steps
- Define the user goal owned by the manager and non-overlapping output contracts for specialists. [openai-multi-agent]
- Limit each specialist’s context, tools, and maximum scope. [openai-multi-agent]
- Register each specialist with
specialist.as_tool(tool_name="...")so the manager retains control of the final answer. [openai-multi-agent] - Require bounded results and evidence from specialists; let the manager reconcile conflicts and gaps before answering. [openai-multi-agent]
- Test one specialist, multiple specialists, and specialist failure to ensure the manager retains final control. [openai-multi-agent]
How to verify
Confirm specialist calls return as subtasks, while the manager produces one final answer and flags unresolved conflicts.
Troubleshooting
If the manager loses control of the final answer, use specialists as tools rather than transferring ownership with a handoff.
